Humayun Ahmed was born on 13th November 1948 at Mohongonj, Netrokona. He is a famous and probably the most popular writer in Bangladesh.

Humayun Ahmed’s father Foyzur Rahman, a police officer, was murdered by the Pakistani army during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Younger brother Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is considered as the best science fiction writer of Bangla language. He's also a children's book writer, columnist and a professor. Their brother Ahsan Habib is also a popular writer.

Humayun Ahmed went to Chittagong Collegiate School for his secondary education. He did a very good result (Board Stand) in both his Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) and Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C.) examinations. After that he completed his graduation from the University of Dhaka with excellent result. He obtained a PhD. in Polymer Chemistry from the North Dakota State University.

Humayun Ahmed joined the Department of Chemistry in Dhaka University as a lecturer. He retired as a Professor of the Department of Chemistry (According to his novel “Chobi Bananor Galpo”) of the University of Dhaka and he is also an honorary fellow in writing at the University of Iowa.

Humayun Ahmed is one of the most popular novelists and dramatists in Bangladesh. His stories and novels involve lives of the middle-class people. He started his authorial life with Nondito Naroke (In Blissful Hell) in 1973. Immediately after Nondito Naroke, Humayun’s Shankhaneel Karagar (Flowers of Flame) was published in the same year, though the later one was the first novel written by Humayun. These two books brought him much acquaintance among the reading public of Bangla novels. Since then, he has published more than a hundred novels. Many of his novels have been adapted successfully for television serials and plays.He has recently emerged as a successful filmmaker. He was elected as one of the best ten living Bangali by 'Muktadhara'.
